This post some hobbies to pursue by Gina got me thinking about how few hobbies I have in my mid-70s and then about all the hobbies I have pursued over the years.
Please let me know what hobbies you are enjoying at this point in your life.
Hobbies now only cover three of my categories: physically active, creative/expanding, nurturing - walking, Pilates, reading, blogging, exploring new places/restaurants locally, dog Mom
I want more activities in my life now so let's go down memory lane and remember hobbies from earlier in life. I'm sure I've missed some!
The others over my lifetime - The ones in bold are ones I think I could do right now and might enjoy adding back into my life!
Physically Active - climbing trees (I'd still like to try a zip line through trees!), swimming, badminton, tennis, paddleball, kite flying, ice skating (including outdoors at Yosemite), roller skating, hiking, boating & canoeing, bicycling, square dancing, line dancing (offered at my current city rec center), swing dancing, jumping rope, yoga, aerobics, strength training, backpacking, camping, skiing, waterskiing, horseback riding
Creative/Expanding - writing including poetry/Haiku, woodworking, pottery on a wheel and hand building, needlework (embroidery, needlepoint, knitting, crocheting), drawing, acrylic and watercolor painting, creating a vision board, going to art exhibits/galleries/fairs/walks, live theater, music performances of many kinds, reading and author talks
Challenging - shooting pool, croquet, Monopoly, Scrabble, science projects, 4-H projects (school and work mostly took care of this part of me lol)
Social - entertaining, being in book clubs & women's groups, volunteering (Friends of the Library, PTA, band boosters)
Learning - genealogy, classes and reading on many subjects through on-line courses, art centers, Open Universities and Senior Universities.
Nurturing - cooking, baking bread, home decorating, gardening
Square dancing! Pottery! Scrabble! You have so many good ones listed. Learning should definitely go on my list, too.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately most of them were in the past! I'm in the boat of needing to embrace more at this time of life.
Deleteand thanks btw
DeleteYou have certainly had many wonderful hobbies over the years. Me, well I have stuck pretty much to the same hobbies throughout my life. Love to read, do counted cross stitch, embroidery, knitting, hiking (though that is a great deal slower now), growing flowers. I have added some new ones over the years. I now do simple quilts, have started weaving, sew more of my own clothing, and I have started to make herbal salves as well.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
My husband has stuck with variations of his hobbies over the years as well. I think that is great.
DeleteI was an early adapter of hobbies! In roughly chronolical order: Needlepoint was my first (at about 4, but my learning piece was surprisingly good enough that I finished it as a teenager and framed it for my mother. Hand sewing yo-yos and making yarn pom-poms (both for my mom to use in making clowns for the church bazaar), knitting, reading, bike riding, crochet, embroidery, carving figures from soap bars, making doll clothes, oil painting, playing piano and flute, decopage, drawing, baking, writing (short stories/poetry), sewing clothes, tatting, quilting, board games, puzzles, home decorating (painting, wallpapering, stenciling, removing and laying floor tiles), walking, stamping, card making, scrapbooking (short lived), teaching stamping, and calligraphy.
ReplyDeleteDue to time, space, and financial constraints, I have decreased my hobbies to my three favorites; reading, card making and quilting. :)
Your hobby history sounds like mine in terms of variety! I think I forgot puzzles in my list though.
DeleteIf I saw something I liked, I wanted to try making it myself. :) And though I limit myself to two now, I did keep all my knitting needles and crochet hooks in case I get bitten by those bugs again.
DeleteI gave all of mine plus drawing pencils to my DIL about a year ago as she was interested in trying those. Hopefully easy to replace if I want to.
DeleteHi Juhli, I was thinking about this a lot lately. I am not handy or patient. So, knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting; common hobbies of my friends are not for me. I have been spending too much time online and I would like to limit this. I have taken up studying Korean and now it is a hobby for me. Hopefully, I will put my knowledge to test in September and see how I will do. Also, I haven't been reading as I used to and I want to go back to doing that.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting!
DeleteHi Juhli, you've highlighted a good number of hobbies in your list, so I think you may simply need encouragement to begin engaging in them once again? If so, I'm here to encourage you!
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to bore you with my list, LOL, but will offer that it is generally inertia I need to work to overcome, not a lack of things to do. 🙂
thanks - and inertia is a challenge but you seem very active and busy
