San Antonio August 4, 1945

My parents wedding day photo on what I assume is the courthouse steps. Mom was 23 and Dad 24 but both had birthdays within a week after. My Dad's older brother was best man and their new landlady the other witness. They rented a converted enclosed porch and one room as housing was so scarce due to the influx of soldiers.

  1. You photo is great! My parents converted an attic into living space during that same time frame because housing was so scarce.

    1. Where did they live? I don't think we know enough about how the war affected lives in the USA other than the internment camps, scrap drives and some rationing. At least I don't.

  2. Handsome couple. I am a sucker for a fellow in a uniform.

    1. Well there were certainly lots of them then! Actually my parents met at a USO dance in Illinois and she found him (finally - couldn't remember his name LOL) at the next dance and the rest is history.

  3. What a priceless photo! They look like they're on a movie set. But, oh, I can practically feel that August heat on those court house steps, and your poor dad and uncle in long-sleeved khaki.

    1. They were so happy to have survived the air war in Europe for my dad and Asia for my uncle that nothing else gazed them even heat.

  5. Thanks for sharing the photo of your parents! I agree with you Juhli, I don't think we know enough about life back then. You mentioned internment camps--there was one called Camp Ellis, in Fulton County, Illinois, a stone's throw from where I grew up, and we never even knew it was there!
