Design Your Dream Summer

NPR recently had an article about how to design your dream summer which included access to a printable worksheet by Gretchen Rubin (4 ways to design a dreamy summer). I filled it out to get my summer bucket list ideas down.

I liked the "five-senses portrait" of summer exercise and went with my instant first thoughts for each blank. I can some are from childhood (lilacs scented air) while others are lifelong or triggered by what I see and here now.

Then I filled out the "My summer bucket list" of activities I want to do or have been meaning to cross off my list. Again I brainstormed and didn't look at my To Do Lists. I wrote them down as they popped into my mind so it is a hodgepodge list with a mix of fun ideas plus To Do items that are obviously weighing on my mind. Aspirational for sure but many are readily doable.

* Photograph of draw flowers & butterflies

* Buy watermelons and cantaloupes

* Watch Enola Holmes 3

* Go to MOMA in San Francisco

* Jazz night at bookstore in Berkeley

* Find a trust lawyer and get started

* Walk to the city's World One 4th of July Festival (jazz after lunch)

* Shop for card table sized table & chairs for upstairs

* Shop for a shade for upstairs bath window

* July 31 days of stretching

* Draw first 6 dog pictures from calendar

* Get better at jumping (bone density & strength exercise)

* Go to Sonoma Botanical Garden for mosaic art exhibit plus lunch in Sonoma

* Go to the Ashby Village orientation (aging well resource & community)

* Ask about book clubs at bookstore

What's on your list for summer?

  1. I know technically summer just started last week, but since May was hot and Memorial Day seemed early, I feel we're a month in. Id like to have at least 6 day trips, plan a small affordable overnight trip, see a few outdoor concerts, pack a picnic lunch each week and head out with the dogs, and to read 6 books. I'll use labor day weekend as my summer

    1. Your situation is true for most of the US I suspect. Opposite situation here in the East Bay area. June is foggy and generally cool still requiring jackets but September is the hottest month. My summer is going to be July thru September.

  2. We chose to live in the South years ago. But now the heat and humidity bothers me much much more. So I'm trying to have things to look forward to just to get through the season . It's working out pretty well -- Swimming, eating watermelon, sitting outside in the mornings on our deck...with the fan on me to keep the mosquitos away! Indulging in a fancy Frappuccino at Starbucks, going to the movies (which we never do...so it will be fun), and reading some summery books.

    1. Sounds lovely! When we lived in Atlanta for 20 years I kept blessing the inventor of air conditioning which I didn't have growing up in Illinois.

  3. I am diligently working on my bucket list which includes some late spring things I didn't get around to for the house, and some relaxation in the form of beer with friends, reading, and trying new places to eat. Jazz night at a bookstore sounds like great fun!

  5. I love this post, Juhli. You are really proceeding with bringing more and more into your life with each post, which I believe was one of your goals this year?

    My biggest issue is energy! The activities are all there for the taking, it's the energy that lags. So, you've given me much to ponder on how to improve my energy via the daily choices I make. Thank you!

  6. My entire life has been spent avoiding watermelon...until about 3 or 4 years ago. Now I like it...go figure! I've got a lot of watermelon to make up for! :)

    1. That is interesting. Why were you avoiding it? I will admit to not eating papaya after having food poisoning from a crab salad containing it although I know my avoidance is illogical as I’ll still eat crab!
