So far to go on my exercise program

So I talked to a woman my age at the gym after yoga class and asked her how she worked in her weight workouts with the class. Obviously I have a way to go on my fitness. She had done 30 min of aerobics on the cross trainer and upper body and abs workouts before yoga! She goes to the gym 6 days a week as a health intervention as she has rheumatoid arthritis and can't move if she doesn't work out. I certainly felt like a slug as I was simply wondering whether to do weights tomorrow or Wednesday!

  1. Thank you for being transparent, it's so refreshing.
I started physical therapy in Oct 2014 for osteoarthritis in my hips and knees. I was tired of ending up on pain meds the last three winters. When I expressed this to my primary she prescribed the PT. When I completed two courses of PT, all that my insurance would cover, I had to switch over to exercise on my own to keep the benefit I had acquired from the PT - stronger leg muscles, more flexible joints, and much better balance.
I joined the YMCA here and met with their personal trainer who created a plan for me with the strength training equipment. I also added a swim class in the warm therapy pool which I enjoy. The hard part is fitting these into my schedule. I work full-time and take a class which meets on Mon and Wed 6-7:30 p. I am slowly going less and less. It's true we've had a lot of bad weather as well. Another issue sometimes is there can be too many people trying to use the strength machines. Timing is an issue. I would be happy if I could go twice a week.
Last Friday I attended my first yoga class which is taught at the university where I work. I really enjoyed this a lot and I can do it completely on my lunch hour which is great.
I say all this to both sympathize and encourage you. No matter what level of exercise we want to find a "happy medium" I have to keep moving as it keeps this pain at bay and keeps me able to do what I need to do. I am going to keep trying things until I find what works for me.
Looking forward to reading more of your posts.

    1. Thank you for sharing your health journey Debbie. Glad you found the yoga class. Does your university make their gym available to employees? The one near me has a fabulous gym and pool.I am fortunate that my osteoarthritis is minimal and I do so admire the woman I talked to who is actively addressing her rheumatoid arthritis with such commitment. My personal exercise goal in addition to overall fitness is to try to lower my "bad" cholesterol level and avoid becoming weak from being sedentary. The weather has been a challenge for people in most of the country.
