Sometimes it has to do with the sunlight bouncing off of a car parked outside in just the right spot.
At our previous house I had a west facing window that I placed a live potted ficus tree in front of. Every afternoon it made the most gorgeous shadow art on our living room wall. I really miss that as no window in our current house does it.
