5 Things Friday #14 - An unremarkable week

Hope you all enjoyed last weekend whether you celebrate Easter or not. We spent time with my DIL's extended family and got to see the kids have fun finding plastic eggs with treats in them and then hang out until dinner. Our dog and another joined the party and had a good time.

Otherwise, it's been an unremarkable week -

1. In the "it's just money" category -

I found a quarter while walking the dog in the nearby park. Up $0.27 for 2026 lol - it is fun to find these small amounts on dog walks. Not sure who drops money because hardly anyone here uses it anymore.

We got a refund check for $9 as the Honda dealer overcharged us for registration for the new car.

Got the bill for car insurance reflecting the accident. Yikes. 40 years with Allstate with no claims and no consideration of that. I do realize part of the increase is having a new car and adding collision coverage as a result. Making a couple of tweaks to the policy for small savings and I will be shopping around to see if we can do better.

2. The holes made in our street to upgrade the sewer lines were filled with the final asphalt. What a project coordinating all the steps to complete this project for the large area of town that they have been working on. Glad to have attention to aging infrastructure.

3. We are getting a decent rainstorm coming through starting in the wee hours of the morning today.

4. Today is "date night" for our son and DIL so we get to hang out with our older granddaughter for the evening which is a joy.

5. We have decided to take a local field trip next week and visit the John Muir House National Historic Site and then go out for lunch. We are calling it our anniversary gift.

  1. the same with Allstate and me. We've had them for over 50 years and no claims on an accident. And it almost tripled. have fun on the little trip next week. Boy did we have lightning and thunder last night.!!

    1. I've read that AAA is good for seniors and who has had an accident. We will be getting a quote from them.

  2. As a former insurance underwriter, perhaps it will make you feel just a bit better about your rate increase to learn that there is no such thing as a loyalty discount in CA. Insurance is tightly overseen by the CA Dept of Ins (CDI), and loyalty discounts were not allowed when I was in the biz

It's more likely your rate increase was due to your new vehicle, and possibly from being considered partially responsible in your accident, with a subsequent charge assessed. That might be something for you to check on with your agent. If you were not at fault, no charge would be assessed. If you were, than either one point - similar to a traffic ticket - or two points if bodily injury was involved/charged, which is similar to being charged for two traffic tickets, resulting in the loss of your Good Driver discount.

  3. Hubby used to take care of all of the insurance policy details and sadly, he did not share his knowledge with me. I rely on a couple of his co-workers to help me navigate it, but I so wish we had had those conversations.

  4. I wonder if all insurance companies are the same in that regard. It seems like while the car insurances may go down overall, our house insurance and extra medical are always going up.

    God bless.

    1. Wow, you are lucky car insurance has gone down where you are. Year after year of large increases here.

  5. I'd love to hear about your trip to John Muir house. Read a non-fiction book a few years ago that he and Teddy Roosevelt played prominently in.

  6. Hope you enjoyed granddaughter time while mom and dad were on date night. We have really been slacking in the date night department. But we are kind of watching pennies until we go to London in a couple of weeks. Hope you got your rain. We had a little bitty bit yesterday. Cloudy today. Wish we would get more.
Car insurance is terribly expensive. My daughter just added my granddaughter to her policy and they were floored by the increase.
