Growing up in central Illinois, Fall definitely was the time to prepare for the coming harsh Winter. It was also time to get the last of the big garden harvest, play in piles of leaves and since we were growing kids, get new cold weather clothes.
My parents retired to New Hampshire so they then had shorter Falls and longer Winters but not the blizzards, snow drifts and ice storms that were definitely possible in Illinois. I will admit I don’t miss that type of Winter, but lots of rain and wind in cold but not bitter temperatures is it’s own kind of chilly especially when walking the dog early in the morning!
I’m enjoying pumpkin treats and thinking of all the things that can be made with apples. I’ll have to see if there is an apple orchard around here or simply go to the fancy-schmancy farmer’s market to get some different varieties plus other Fall treats.
What brings a sense of Fall to you given where you live now or where you grew up?
Oh, autumn here in North Carolina is AMAZING. The older I get the harder the hot summers are. So now that it is fall...and delightfully in the 70s (sometimes 60s,sometimes 80s), we can go take walks and sit outside and just enjoy. I miss the gorgeous leaf display from when I lived in Canada or Pennsylvania, but I totally love everything else about fall here!
ReplyDeleteI hear you on the relief of Fall after summers in the SE as we lived in Atlanta for 20 years. Love Fall foliage too.
DeleteThe trees here are pretty well done shedding their fall finery. There are a few that still have leaves, but not many. We have pretty much cleared out the garden, emptied flower pots, and finished harvesting. Now we have moved on to making sure the vehicles are ready and the snowblower works.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Your Fall seems to end quickly.
DeleteI was sitting in my backyard thinking to myself that it certainly smells like Fall, but the temps say otherwise! Seems like we have summer right through October now...):
ReplyDeleteOctober weather is some of the nicest of the year here.
DeleteThe markers of fall are impossible to miss between Mother's Nature changing her clothes, the stores and restaurants featuring seasonal fare and our childhood lessons driving us to prepare for the winter. I can't believe October is almost over.
ReplyDeleteIt went fast with Halloween in a fe2 days.
DeleteHope you find an apple orchard to visit. My sister makes these delicious (and easy) apple dumplings with fresh apple slices and refrigerated crescent roll dough. Mmmm.
ReplyDeleteWe are skipping the pumpkin patch this year but painting pumpkins tomorrow with the grandkids. I finally coaxed PC into getting my fall decorations out with the promise of purging some which I did.
We have now had 150+ days of over 90* temperatures this year. Isn't that just insane? And 4" of rain for the whole year. El Paso is going to dry up and blow away.
No orchards nearby but I’ll head to the fancy farmer’s market in November. Those apple dumpling sound delicious and easy so my kind of recipe.
DeleteI've never lived where there were beautiful autumns. But since my birthday is in late October, I usually can get a vacation in that suits my yearning...since I'm the head of budgeting and planning in our partnership. ;) Honestly the thing that has always made me feel that autumn is almost on us is the smell of a box of new crayons and other school supplies. LOL
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the going back to school feeling!
