Same surgery, different recovery experience

I was expecting to experience pretty much the same things during the first week or so of recovery from bunion surgery this year as I did last year. In many ways that has been true but in others not.

Perhaps it is because of expectations but I have experienced less pain this time although I took the prescription painkiller for the same amount of time. Certainly we were able to make some of the mobility challenges easier by arranging things differently.

What has been different this time I think is my reaction to the over the counter medications for pain and inflammation and need to cut back on them to eliminate side effects. I also feel like I am sleeping a lot more which I suppose is good for healing and may result from my being in less pain and thus more active.

I have been making a concerted effort to do more for myself which has been good but tiring. It has helped Hubby be less worn out too.

All in all 10 days out it is going well and I am pleased with progress. After the year and a half of COVID restrictions though it is sad to have to say no to upcoming social events like a wedding celebration and listening  to a friend’s band play . I know I won’t be able to handle the drive and the actual event physically by then though without feeling miserable so there is no way to go.

First I have to get feeling like being social as I haven’t yet taken friends up on offers to come visit! Working on it.

  1. I am glad you are recovering fast! There is a time for socializing. Now is the time to take care of your own needs. Take care!

  2. This is encouraging to read- glad you are experiencing less pain this time. I finally forced myself to go to the podiatrist as my bunion was throbbing and very uncomfortable. I was worried we'd move right to surgery, but we are taking some measures now (which seem to be helping) in the hopes that I can put off/avoid surgery. All that said, reading your posts have been helpful in knowing what I might expect if I do have it. Happy 4th!

    1. I’m glad it is helpful but there are many different approaches to surgical repair. Mine involves inserting a metal plate to ensure the bone won’t move in the future so may have a different recovery trajectory. Good that you have found some relief!

  3. I am glad that you are suffering less pain. I think this time you were well prepared for your surgery. Perhaps a bit more than the first time.

    God bless.

  5. Less pain is a very, very good thing! It must be encouraging to be able to do more for yourself this time around, too. Our bodies are so interesting, and although much is known, there are still many unanswered questions. I remember reading that our nerve cells actually remember pain and how to heal. Your experience makes me wonder...
May you have continued success as you recover. Thank you for this update, too!

  6. Glad to hear update and that you have less pain that previously. Be kind to, and patient with, yourself as you heal. Sending good thoughts.

  7. Read your posts in backward order. Glad to know you did finally have someone come over for a visit. I am sure that will help pass the time. Sitting outside, too, maybe? Sketching? The collages with the Maker Bee Hive? Snapping photos for the summer photo scavenger hunt with Mary-Lou at Patio Postcards?
Glad you are in less pain. I have to watch pain meds because they can really foul up my digestive tract. And I have kidney disease they are pretty much a no-no. Hope you are soon more mobile.
