I was raised with the stock up mentality of depression survivors and really cemented that approach myself when I had to manage on a very small budget as a young mother and wife and college student. I'm trying to break myself of that habit! There are just the two of us and although we need a small supply of food, etc. to get us through a weather problem or power outage (like last year's ice storm) we don't need to stock up on things.
So my new mantra: Do NOT buy more until you have used up what you have!!!!!

Really, I am glad you said this out loud. It brings up all kinds of issues. Like "do I remember if I already have a bottle of that", or "I only have a dash left...if it okay to buy more" or "will it ever be on sale for this price again?". Stocking up should be tempered by a realization about shelf life, how long will I live :) and where will I put it. It is not as black and white as I would like it to be.

b - It can be such a strong habit to stock up instead of taking an attitude of "plenty". I have no doubt that there will be more of whatever available when I need it so why do I want to stock up?
DeleteI'm committed to doing this with all my toiletries.
ReplyDeleteI am with you! My hand is the third from the left. : )
ReplyDeleteBliss - I have been thinking more about this today and wondering how many things in life it can apply to. Clothes, furnishings, books, and the list goes on.
DeleteOh my, you've hit a cord with me. I go through fits of buying things like lentils..... or brown rice..... or shampoo..... because I can't remember if I have it at home - and OF COURSE I DO! A couple of times a year, we focus on 'eating out of the pantry' to use up my accidental stockpiles. But I still have 4 bags of lentils.... :)
ReplyDeleteSybil - So funny! My problem is the its on sale mentality for low cost items. We don't use that much shampoo, etc. and after all of these years I know how much we actually need as backup.
