Wow, my "baby" is looking to buy a house

I don't usually feel old as I'm only 64 and my Mom is 93 and perking along pretty well. However, I have to admit that talking to my younger son and DIL about their search for a house to buy is making me feel a bit old. They are looking in Berkeley and the prices reflect that. I'm having old geezer moments when I can't believe anyone would take on a mortgage that large LOL. Must not compare now to decades ago I repeat as my mantra.

Honestly, I'm excited for them. We will visit in mid February and tour their new area. Don't know if they will have found a house by then but we have the luxury of looking at photos online of the ones they are considering. Technology is so helpful with things like that.

We will be selling and buying in 4 years at a much different phase of life but probably moving from Atlanta back to CA and a much pricier market. It makes me think it will be a very challenging move not only on the usual retiring and moving levels but also financially. Hard to know what the markets will be like then but CA is always more expensive than Atlanta so it is good that we will be downsizing. Just hope it isn't to a miniscule home as we both have rather large space needs LOL.

  1. What an exciting time for them! My DD and her hubby just bought their first place in San Diego county, and I have to say it's much nicer than our first place was back in the day!

I know the Bay Area is insane, price wise, but remember that if the total sum of PITI is around 30% of their salary, they should be fine, regardless of the price of the home. That was the same equation our lender used back when we bought our first home in 1981. :-)

    1. I know they will be fine as much as anyone can be with their mortgage. They are very smart and competent. It is interesting how it makes me feel though.

    2. Not so much old as realizing that I view the future as a slow decline rather than an upward improvement. I guess I'm avoiding the word old LOLl

  2. What's going on ... is it a trend? B's younger son is also (at age 22) buying his first house, in So. Carolina. We think he's too young. But then what do we know?!?

    1. That is young but everyone has different dreams. My son is 31 but he is my youngest so his milestones hit me harder I think.

  3. Hi Juhli! Just got done reading up on your blog and had a quick question. I was hoping that you could email me back when you get the chance. Thanks!

  4. I’m excited for them and for you as well. You must be really proud that your son is all grown-up and is now about to become a homeowner. I see you pushed through with the visit to their area. It seems you really enjoyed the trip. Anyway, how did the house look like? Is it beautiful?
