Why is it so hard to find a Mother of the Groom dress that is attractive and age appropriate?

I really thought this would be easy. I'd pick a couple of stores, go shopping and have a great dress to wear to my son's wedding. Well, I didn't think it would be that easy since I wear petite clothes but I didn't think it would be this hard.

I've asked my friends for help and found they shopped long and hard before finding something. One went to many stores and had to go more than once to some before finally finding a dress. Another who recently had surgery on her feet is ordering any dress that catches her eye during on-line shopping and then trying them all on at home.

I didn't start early enough! The wedding is May 4th and this may take that long. Add to it the need for something to wear to the rehearsal followed by dinner in a park and to brunch the day after the wedding and I'll really get to know our stores.

OK, I am picky and I live in jeans, yoga pants, capris or shorts. I used to dress up in suits when I had an office based job but never had formal wear.

I'd prefer a knee length dress although tea length would work. No black. I want a modest neckline and prefer cap or short sleeves. It needs a jacket or appropriate cover up as the evening can be cool near the beach in S. CA.

I'm signing up for personal shoppers at Macy's and Nordstrom's and guess I will hit up some bridal shops too. I am delighted about this wedding by the way!

I'll let you know how it turns out but any suggestions are welcome.

  1. I find it really hard to find an outfit just to attend a wedding so I feel your pain - I would go the personal shopper route too. Good luck :)

    1. Thanks. I am so looking forward to our son's wedding and want to feel comfortable and great in the dress I wear. At least comfortable LOL. We have a second family wedding later in the summer so at least it will get worn twice.

  2. I'm a bit younger than you, but have the same values as you, I prefer modest clothes as well, and find it very hard to find something that doesn't "show it all". At the last wedding I went to, I was shocked at the "bandage" dresses most of the women were wearing... most in 2 sizes too small. Eek! I think a towel wrapped around me would have covered more! lol!! I hope you find that perfect dress!! Please post a photo if you can after you find it... :)

    1. I think I'd look like a sausage in a bandage dress! I just want to be comfortable and look good for the photos. I did just find two to order from Macy's website and hubby liked one a lot. The Macy's here don't carry either but they have free shipping on returns.

  3. I shop online a great deal, however I "know my size" ninety percent of the time at three or four websites. even if you don't shop online I would suggest you spend a day looking and if you see something that is close towhat you like, print it out so you can say "something like this"

I tend to go with a duster and dress for something like that, but this is sleeveless admittedly

    1. That is a cute dress you linked. However, my future DIL's mother is going formal and long. I am doing short but it still needs to be very dressy.

  4. I think that your shopping strategy will work out just fine. I also like the suggestion about looking on the internet. The bridal stores will probably have the best selections. Have fun...... what a wonderful part of life you are in right now!

    1. Thanks Anna. I am having more fun with it now that I have accepted that department stores won't have anything I like in my size. I've ordered 2 dresses and also some possible spring slacks that I need. More ordering to come and I'll hit up some bridal shops too.
