Who has a pill box at your house? Human or pet?

At my house it is the dog!

I posted that on Facebook and a friend back East commented that it was her cat who had one. Very thankful for veterinary medicine and a thoughtful, competent vet who looks carefully for the right solutions carefully for the dog's medical problems but doesn't push any treatment after carefully explaining our options and the pros and cons.

That being said, we are adding a 4th pill to her daily regime (plus a once a month shot and prescription food) to hopefully keep her happy and bouncy despite significantly worsening kidney disease indicators.

I've said it before but she really is a sturdy little medical miracle. She survived abuse as a pup, developed Addison's disease at 3 1/2 but a different and equally wonderful vet in Atlanta diagnosed that and got her on treatment and thriving before it was too late. Now she is 12 1/2 and we are still treating Addison's plus kidney disease and high blood pressure. She also is sleeping a lot more and I just realized she may be "leaking" pee during the night because she is so sound asleep for so long. Toddler bed washable pads to the rescue there.

We do know that she is on borrowed time but as long as she is happy and feeling ok we are enjoying her as we have for the past 11 years. We needed her and she needed us. Our home will feel empty once she is gone but for now all is well.

"Now stop writing and throw the stuffed lamb toy please Mom! I love to chase after it and play a game with you."

  1. Yesterday, I visited a friend whose dog will turn 15 in December. She has cataracts, a heart disease and some lumps. She also started having accidents at home. My friend knows she is on borrowed time too. She says now her dog is a grumpy grandma. There is so much unconditional love a dog gives it's owner. Hugs to you and your pup.

    1. Thank you. I forgot all the old dog lumps lol. And hair thinning from the meds. She is a lovely and loving little dog. We hope she has some more happy time.

    1. Agreed and when you find a really good one especially so.

  3. Levi never made it to that stage of life where he needed a pill box. I don't know which is worse, watching our fur babies decline or having them go in a emergency situation. Treasure your little girl for as long as you can and she is happy.

    1. I’ve had both with previous dogs and they both are incredibly sad. Levi was a great companionship for you.

  4. What a well loved pup. Her luck certainly turned around when she became your baby. PC and I both have pill boxes. So far our "kitties" are healthy at 8 years old each. I have struggled to find their favorite food - Fancy Feast chicken Primavera but today I hit the jackpot. A whole case of it at Walmart.

    1. That is the cat food jackpot! We think we lucked out with this dog as she has been a great pet. I learned yesterday that the dog’s new medicine is out of stock everywhere so we will just keep on with fingers crossed until it becomes available.
