Silly me. I thought not dying or being horribly sick was enough of an incentive to get the COVID vaccine and the reward was the same. Still, a bit annoyed that I'm missing out on the lottery and other prizes being offered in California to encourage those who have not been vaccinated.
To be fair, many of them probably wanted to but in many places and for many reasons including transportation, work, caretaking challenges, etc. they haven't been able to yet. I am happy that my county has brought vaccines to farmworkers and used lots of mobile vaccine or pop up vaccine clinics to help get our success rate up and reach those who couldn't navigate an appointment at the big sites. I think they are now starting in home visits too for those who are homebound.
I honestly don't care what it takes to get people to make the decision to get vaccinated and hope everyone who can will do so!
Happy surprise though in my email box this morning. My supplemental health insurance (BCBS Federal) is offering $50 to every member who uploads proof of vaccination. It goes on a card that can be used to pay for prescriptions and OTC medications. I like being rewarded for having done the right thing for me and others early on.
Hmmm, I'll look for a reward from my insurance carrier, but I won't count on it. As you suggest, for most of us the vaccine itself is its own reward.

DeleteOne of the beer companies is buying a beer for any vaccinated. You upload prove and get a coupon of some sort. Someone else is giving away a free car. I think these kinds of gimmicks will work for younger people so more power to them.

DeleteJust this past week I spoke with a woman who said she wasn't getting the vaccine because her daughter is afraid of it. She was wearing a mask, but I found myself thinking about the huge sense of relief I felt when I was fully vaccinated. I know there are no guarantees, but if we do all that we can do, it brings more peace of mind. I don't know why so many are dragging their feet. When you think about it, if someone will get the vaccine in order to have free beer or a chance at a lottery, then you wonder how they value their health. Just thinking...
ReplyDeleteThere has been a lot of research on how people miscalculate relative risk and I think that applies here for those who are making decisions based on emotion not on science and data. Unfortunate.
