Resisting the buying urge while running errands

Yesterday I left the house to do three things: ship a book I had sold, buy mouthwash and pick up a prescription. I succeeded in only spending money on those three things but not without giving myself a couple of lectures!

First stop was the post office. Right next door to my favorite coffee shop where had I stopped for a while the day before! Love their coffee and pastries. Perhaps just grab a non-fat latte? Nonononono!

Then to the drugstore. Look, kleenex is on sale! We have 3 extra boxes at home and I am committed to not stockpiling so - nonononono! But the laundry detergent I use is on sale! Oh yeah, I have 2 1/2 containers of it sitting at home and it takes us about 3 months to go through one. No again.

I made it home with nothing extra but it would have been so easy to mindlessly add more food and spending on stockpiling to my morning.

Tough stuff this self-control LOL!

  1. I almost did the same. In Kmart, thick cotton towels, four dollars, duvet covers only ten bucks in cotton. But we don't need either, I left them, a little sadly.

    1. It does come up often doesn't it. Marketing and advertising are based on well researched behavioral science and we all have habits to break as we resist them.

  4. All I can say is: I'm impressed! I would have succumbed to every one of those temptations . . . and I have plenty of extra boxes of stuff in the basement to prove it!

    1. That is what I am trying to avoid - the house full of stuff! Avoiding the coffee shop is more about trying to be healthier.

  5. Isn't that the truth Juhli! And where paying with cash pays off . . . I really think hard about an impulse buy when I know I'll have to use cash. (Vs a cc or debit card, which is relatively painless)

  6. Well done! Deals on things we "need" is one of the hardest things to resist!

  7. A skim latte is 100 or calories. You saved your wallet and your figure.

I quit buying coffee at work and take a thermos. I can buy expensive coffee, drink it at home and at work and still come out ahead.

    1. I also buy expensive coffee and make it at home - great isn't it? I think I need more structure in my life that gets me out of the house so I don't go to the coffee shop to do that.
