Milestone in decluttering

Yeah - Today I reached the milestone of over 150 items decluttered since I started counting! It surprises me that I could find that many things to get rid of as no one would ever say my house is cluttered.

That number included letting go today of items from my sons' childhood (they are 41 and 28 LOL) that they would never want.  My memories are intact and I took the bags right to Goodwill so I couldn't change my mind.

Keep in mind that I didn't count anything that was replaced so I am feeling really good about this progress.

If you are decluttering how are you doing and where do you find yourself struggling?

  1. Good for you. I have bins at the end of my bed -one for stuff to sell (that has overloaded to my dining room table along with the thrift stuff I buy to resell), one is stuff to donate and one is stuff to put away properly-like the small group of Christmas stuff I found around the house this morning that got forgotten when we packed up. Ill never be a minimalist, but...

    1. Barb - I admire your entrepreneurial spirit! I just want it out of the house and take the tax deduction LOL.

  2. This is a perpetual thing with me, but I never thought to count. I wish I had. I probably have at least 21 things currently in my car to drop off at Goodwill. I'm working in the attic and finding more stuff we don't need!

    1. I had never counted before and thought there was very little left. Turns out it is the hard things that are left! I can't even imagine adding real attic space to the mix.

  3. Isn't it amazing how quickly things add up? I'm trying for another 1000! Here's hoping...

    1. Wow - another 1000! I'd have to really get my hubby on board and tackle the basement.

  4. It really is amazing how quickly things add up! I came up with the get rid of 100 things challenge for the month of January and easily accomplished that the first week!

Thank you so much for all your help and comments about decorating the beach house! I've been responding in the comments on my blog for the most part. The links you gave me today were great, especially the black and whites. What did you think about the one that added the bright colors with the black and white?

    1. Martha - the one with the bright colors was the one I thought might resonate with you. I also liked the one that had some mirrored pieces - would lighten it up. If it were my place I'd probably try to find some inexpensive and large prints to go on the wall that have the sandy colors like your floor, a bit of black and white as well as some brighter colors in them. Then I'd pick colors for accent pillows, etc. from them. I'm thinking some turquoise and coral might work with white and black to warm it up. I liked the comment about floor pillows too.

  5. Congrats on the clean out!! I did our attic a year or so ago, lots of things went to goodwill that I had forgot we had up there from our children 28,29 and 34. I am trying to do a major clean out of each room again this year, crazy how fast things seem to creep in (adults kids seem to leave to much now days)

    1. Debby - It is interesting how long our children's things can hang around! Good luck on your major clean out this year.

  6. I have decluttered so much over the past year I wish I would've kept better track of what has gone out of here. And yet, I look around and still see more. My husband really gets worried now when I get in "the mood" because nothing is too sacred. I always feel like there is more to get rid of and that is where I struggle the most...hard to keep balanced. But I have been very successful living by my something in, something out rule. I have to have that one in place to feel like I am keeping on top of things. ~~Bliss

    1. Bliss - I sure agree with the one in - at least one out which is why I am not counting things that are replace. Unfortunately there does always seem to be more to get rid off.

  7. I've got four shopping bags filled right now and will, with luck, fill more before the annual church rummage sale -- the delightfully named "Superfluity" sale.
I also hope to sell (probably at a loss) some art that I inherited in the divorce. I don't know that any of it will find buyers in this area. For a couple of years now I've fretted over that. Now I've decided to photograph it and put it on Craigslist. If no one buys it after a few consecutive postings, I will donate it somewhere.
The hardest part for me will be going through papers. I have a fair amount of ephemera and I want to scale down, but getting rid of some of it will be hard for me. Once I figure out why I feel the need to keep it I might be able to decide that it's OK to get rid of some of it. Here's hoping.

    1. Donna - You make a really good point about figuring out why we feel the need to keep certain items.
