Do you have a "tariff" or food shortages pantry?

A reference in a post by the Domestic Mrs. Murphy to stocking up her tariff pantry got me thinking about what may become very difficult to purchase or outrageously expensive as we try to survive not only the ever changing impulsive tariffs but also the decimation of the farm and meat industry workforce.

Of course one could answer for the latter "Everything!" but what specifically is likely to go away first due to tariffs and second due to crops not getting processed. What might we want to add to our pantries.

I used a CVS coupon before it expired to buy a small bag of granulated sugar simply because we were getting low but it also dawned on me that sugar may be affected by tariffs. However this particular product was from a Colorado coop of sugar beet farmers. Cane sugar however is mostly imported I believe.

Let's hear what you are adding to your pantry as backup whether in small or large quantities please.

  1. I have always had a pantry of sorts and usually keep it well stocked. This is mainly because I live in an area that is prone to get blizzards and keep us snowed in for awhile. I am now trying to eat down the freezer of the older stock, but still purchase on sale meats in order to try and beat the ever rising costs.

    God bless.

    1. Weather and potential natural disasters are a good reason to have a pantry. We are in both a high risk earthquake zone and lesser risk wildfire zone but power & water outages could occur from both even if more distant. I grew up in a snow/blizzard/ice storm area too.

    2. Canned diced tomatoes. I use them so often in my meal prep, so I stocked up, since I knew they would all get used.

    3. I have a row of those along with beans, tuna and peanut butter but that is for earthquake/fire delivery disruptions locally.

  2. The meat packing thing has me a little freaked out for sure! Stock up on sugar -- since it never expires! I am hoping flour doesn't go up too much (it already has some) -- that does expire. I have looked into buying wheat berries in bulk, then grinding. Apparently, they can last a long time when stored airtight. But maybe that's a little extreme?

I suggest stocking up on coffee and tea for sure.

    1. I don’t think it is just meat packing that is impacted. I do have visions of lots of food rotting in the fields as workers quite rightly stay away.

  3. We have been ordering groceries and picking them almost exclusively lately but I have noticed that by doing that my stock of certain staples has gone depleted and unreplenished. I forget about sugar and flour and canned goods until I reach for them and they aren't there. I see that several have recommended stocking up on coffee. Will buy a little extra of that. Probably need to drag my behind into the store to shop for a change in order to pick up the things I forget about getting.

    1. I've never tried ordering groceries but I can see how that would happen!
