So, all those veggies ...

I've been dealing with the mass of veggies I purchased because they all looked so good. So far we have had some mega veggie salads and a wonderful rainbow chard dish as well as zucchini sauteed with onions and garlic. I also made applesauce out of some apples that weren't sitting well in our stomachs when eaten raw.

This afternoon I decided to deal with others in the bin so I washed all the rest of the salad greens and cooked the baby beets and beet greens. I mixed them together and added a bit of vinegar. We will have them tomorrow.

Tonight is fish with leftover green salad and some sweet potato that I bought today. I plan on making a big batch of roasted veggies on Friday to use up a lot of what is left. I might actually make it through it all without tossing any!

Cooking meal after meal is an interesting challenge. Sometimes I am diligent about making up a menu plan and shopping to it. Then I get tired of that and just buy what looks good as well as what we are out of and is on the list. I think of those weeks as more improvisational LOL.

I guess after learning to cook when I was about 9 years old and my Mom had a bad shoulder for about 6 months and then cooking for myself and various family members since I was 19 I am a bit tired of the routine. Fortunately Hubby pitches in and is a good cook. Both my sons have turned into great cooks so I feel like we did a good job there.

Laundry, some cleaning, food shopping and cooking have to be done. How do you keep yourself interested and motivated around these type of repetitive chores?

  1. I retired from work in July of 2013. While working, I always did a massive shopping every two weeks and went home cooked everything and froze it for the coming two weeks. When I was overjoyed I was elated that I could cook a meal every night and for the first few months it was fun trying new recipes. For the past few months, I've grown to hate cooking again. Like you, I learned to cook at an early age. I was one of your original latch key kids and cooked for mom and dad when I got home from school.

I love spring and fall cleaning, changing curtains, etc, but weekly cleaning? No way. Food shopping I love, but I dislike putting the groceries away when I get home.

I can't seem to motivate myself to any of these things anymore, but I do them because I have to.

    1. It seems that we all need to live closer together! We could team clean and cook which might make it more fun. It is interesting that now that I have more time I get fewer chores done. Before I just scheduled them and plowed through.

  2. THAT is a very good question.

I am currently in a decluttering mode and I think this will keep me interested for a year or so. I wouldn't say I am a minimalist, but I plan to confine all my keepsakes in one trunk and everything else must be in USE. Very few decorative items. I think most women our age go through this feeling of needing to be "set free of stuff". This is related to the feeling that housework and daily meal cooking are just not fun anymore.

My parents have passed away (Dad 2011, Mom 2013) and my husband has retired. I know these past few years have been quite stressfull with taking care of my parents and their stuff. My husband has gone through being laid off in 2009, not finding a job for 2 years, working part time at an auto-parts store and developing multiple health symtoms that require him to have to lay down or just not feel good a lot of the time.
I have not cleaned house for years and now it is driving me to the point where I HAVE to do something. (Did I mention I work full time?).

I know MANY women my age find themselves in the same boat, so I don't feel sorry for myself etc. I think not having clutter or every cupboard, drawer and etc full of things is very freeing.

    1. Wow, you and your husband have had a stressful few years. I totally agree that now having clutter is freeing not to mention that dusting is easier. I really, really want a smaller house and yard but we aren't going to move twice at my husband's insistence so am stuck with too much to do in both. I agree it isn't something to complain about as the important things in life are about the people we love.
