$$$$ - Ups and downs today

I am staying home today because there is a crew working on taking down our two at risk very tall trees with a bit of pruning of bushes thrown in for good measure. Given this is costing us almost $4,000 I think the pruning is paid for! I do feel sorry for the woodpeckers who have created such a nice cavity in one tree and hope it isn't a nest tree. I am grateful we can hire such a competent tree removal company. Do you think I can count the trees in my decluttering total, LOL?

I've taken a positive step also by moving some of our cash to a higher interest rate CD although I made the mistake of using an online interest calculator and confirmed that we are still earning less than inflation even before taxes are factored into the equation. Sigh. I am grateful for the fact that Hubby took a look and found a better return for us and that the online account opening appears to have gone smoothly.

The upside of all of this is that we have money to do these things. I am properly grateful and also not out doing any spending today LOL.

Check out the blog Help Me for a take on facing up to your money story. Pretty interesting I think.

  1. $4,000 is a lot of money; but by living frugally in other ways, the money is there for those things--and they will be there--that we have to do if we are homeowners.

    1. Totally agree. All my neighbors and I though really hate spending money on taking down trees no matter how necessary it is. They took 50+ years to get that big and provide a lot of shade and habitat.

  2. Of all the spending we allocate for, this is the type that I enjoy the least. I call it 'thankless' spend. Happy the threat will finaly be removed, and may your next $4000 spend be for something much more fun!

    1. I agree with and like the thankless spend label. Lots of home maintenance seems to fall in that category. You have to do it, you don't enjoy it.

  3. Bravo that you bit the bullet and had the tree work done - before the tree crashed. Tree people take storms and disasters when you absolutely have to have the tree removed as an opportunity to jack their prices up. The smartest thing to do is to get bids and have the work done before it's a crisis.

    1. We have seen too many photos of trees that crushed houses here in Atlanta. We worked with the same tree company that we have used for 17 years to maintain and prune our trees.
