Reminder to self: Do NOT buy more until you have used up what you already own.

I was raised with the stock up mentality of depression survivors and really cemented that approach myself when I had to manage on a very small budget as a young mother and wife and college student.  I'm trying to break myself of that habit!  There are just the two of us and although we need a small supply of food, etc. to get us through a weather problem or power outage (like last year's ice storm) we don't need to stock up on things.

So my new mantra:  Do NOT buy more until you have used up what you have!!!!!

  1. Really, I am glad you said this out loud. It brings up all kinds of issues. Like "do I remember if I already have a bottle of that", or "I only have a dash left...if it okay to buy more" or "will it ever be on sale for this price again?". Stocking up should be tempered by a realization about shelf life, how long will I live :) and where will I put it. It is not as black and white as I would like it to be.

    1. b - It can be such a strong habit to stock up instead of taking an attitude of "plenty". I have no doubt that there will be more of whatever available when I need it so why do I want to stock up?

    1. Bliss - I have been thinking more about this today and wondering how many things in life it can apply to. Clothes, furnishings, books, and the list goes on.

  4. Oh my, you've hit a cord with me. I go through fits of buying things like lentils..... or brown rice..... or shampoo..... because I can't remember if I have it at home - and OF COURSE I DO! A couple of times a year, we focus on 'eating out of the pantry' to use up my accidental stockpiles. But I still have 4 bags of lentils.... :)

    1. Sybil - So funny! My problem is the its on sale mentality for low cost items. We don't use that much shampoo, etc. and after all of these years I know how much we actually need as backup.
